“We must promote the reuse of inert soil excavated from building sites”, an article by New Tank Cities

Interview “We need to promote the reuse of inert soil excavated from building sites” (Laurent Mogno, ECT)
AUA – Paris – Friday, May 17, 2019 – Interview n° 146743

[We need to promote the reuse of excavated inert soil. The recovery of this material from construction sites is noble. It’s not recycling. Soil reuse objectives vary from site to site, depending on local issues. In terms of landscaping, the field of possibilities is immense. Our aim is to develop a circular economy for excavated soil, so that we can design useful developments that contribute to local dynamics,” explains Laurent Mogno, President of the ECT Group, on 07/05/2019.

ECT manages between 12 and 15 million tonnes of excavated materials a year (Parisian backfill clay, marl, sand and silt, rubble, ceramics, bricks, rock, concrete, etc.). 85% is inert soil, with the remaining 15% made up of sulphated soil (backfill from gypsum quarries) and hydrocarbon-impacted soil treated at the ECT biological soil treatment center in La Courneuve (Seine-Saint-Denis). According to SGP, the company in charge of the Grand Paris Express (GPE) project, the soil from the 15 tunnel boring machines to be deployed will account for half of all soil extracted. “ECT’s market share in the management and reuse of soil from construction sites is around 50%,” says Laurent Mogno. “Ile-de-France remains the most dynamic region in France, with the highest levels of soil excavation. The GPE project generated 5 million tonnes of excavated soil in 2017 and 2018, with a view to generating 43 million tonnes by 2030 (partly from soil extracted from the tunnel boring machines)].
