and ECT, publishes

the book “Terres Urbaines, valeurs positives de la ville de demain”, edited by Youssef Diab.

Excavated soil raises new development challenges

The ecological transition is leading us to reconsider our approaches and practices to urban development, which are marked by excessive consumption of resources – materials, energy, water, land, etc. – and by a lack of transparency. – and a lack of recycling. The question of excavated soil and its recovery is essential, and its systemic dimension is all too often overlooked. This is the purpose of the “Valuing Urban Land” chair, which is at the heart of the ecosystem dedicated to research into urban land through biannual symposia, meetings and the publication of this new book.

The issues of land, land management and land reclamation are of major importance when it comes to implementing a sustainable territorial circular economy policy. The spatial scales of management, the methods of enhancement and the symbolism of enhancement are all directly relevant to urban engineering and regional planning.

"To move beyond urban planning, it's essential to change the way we think about, produce and manage the urban environment. The challenge is no longer to separate them by phase or by actor, but to aim for integrative approaches to actors and issues and, above all, to the life phases of structures, and consequently of projects. This integrated management of land with other urban issues is the subject of this book."

Youssef DIAB and Antoine GRUMBACH

Land, a vector for urban dynamics and sustainability

This book places urban land as a vector for urban dynamics and sustainability. The significant and varied uses to which land can be put are a major contributor to this sustainability. The book explores them in four major topical themes:

  • the rehabilitation of derelict sites, as a structuring element for a new territorial landscape;
  • the challenges of landscape and its fundamental role in enhancing the value of urban land ;
  • an environmentally-friendly building material as a georesourced material;
  • the essential element for urban integration of green spaces and biodiversity.

Authors reflect transdisciplinary thinking

“Terres urbaines, valeur positive pour la ville de demain” is the fruit of transdisciplinary thinking. The authors are urban planners, engineers, landscape architects and architects. In line with the symposium held in 2021,… This book mobilizes an ecosystem of specialized, identified players. Through the example of structuring urban projects, we discover new practices involving land management in France and Belgium, as well as in an international metropolis such as Cairo.
