Project life

An air of spring on the meadow in front of the castle

Two years ago, the city of Paris began planting the esplanade Saint-Louis.

The former parking lot has been transformed into a meadow, a favourable environment for biodiversity and a space ready to welcome the public for outdoor events.

Planting the Bois de Vincennes with fertile substrate, the press reports

In the Bois de Vincennes on the Esplanade Saint-Louis, the city of Paris used this Urbafertil approach to create a technosol with complex specifications.

The media turned out in force to appreciate this in situ production.

Nature en ville, ECT plants the Esplanade Saint-Louis in the Bois de Vincennes with fertile substrate.

On May 25, 2020, ECT announced the completion of a greening project on the Esplanade Saint-Louis in the Bois de Vincennes. ECT produced fertile substrate in situ, at the request of the City of Paris. Its manufacture is part of a circular economy and recycling of inert soil from construction and public works, combined with green waste compost. This material is a local, sustainable alternative to imported topsoil, a natural resource that must be preserved. Fertile substrate is an economically sober solution for extending “nature in the city”, a major environmental challenge for tomorrow’s cities.

Recycling on an emblematic site

May 2020- After this winter’s bad weather, work is underway on the esplanade. The specifications include a technosol for outdoor events. A total of 2,800 m3 of fertile substrate is produced, with different types of soil and stony materials. These materials are levelled before being covered with a layer of compost made from plant debris. Once this “mille-feuilles” process has been completed, the substrate is mixed through its entire thickness to homogenize it. The growing medium is then ready to be worked on and planted by the landscaping company.

The circular economy of excavated soil for urban greenery

This project represents a new stage in the deployment of a circular economy for excavated soil at the service of local authorities. The reuse of inert soil represents a tremendous opportunity for the development of natural, agricultural or recreational areas. A major challenge at a time when 63% of French city dwellers express their desire to see more green spaces laid out in their neighborhoods (ECT survey conducted by IFOP, February 2020).

The development of a fertile substrate suitable for planting in urban environments has been the subject of several years of R&D by ECT, culminating in the creation ofUrbafertil in 2019. The composition of this specific brand of substrate can be adapted to each project, while complying with standard NF U 44-551 (growing media).
